Reptile Relocation Unit

What is now referred to as Perry's Bridge Reptile Park's reptile relocation programme actually came to being long before the opening of the reptile park itself.
The service began back in 2004 when we identified the need for such a service based on the high number of snakes found in and around the Hazyview area.
Hazyview is classified as the gateway to the Kruger National Park as well as the renowned Sabie Sands. Hazyview itself is undoubtedly the tourist mecca of the lowveld.
With countless guest lodges, B&B's, timeshare resorts, eco-estates, and hotels Hazyview has the highest density of beds in South Africa.
Hazyview is also the adventure capital of the lowveld with a host of activities available to both local and international clients. Activities such as river rafting, hot-air ballooning, microlight flights, horse-riding, golf, aerial cableways, hiking, not one, but two elephant sanctuaries to mention but a few of the activities avialable.

Mpumalanga, along with Kwa-Zulu Natal, have the highest snake-bite incidents in South Africa. Of the 14 potentially fatal snakes found in South Africa, 8 occur in the province.
For this reason there is little wonder that encounters between human and reptile are regular occurences.
The Reptile Relocation unit bridges the gap between human and reptile safely.

Why is the reptile relocation Unit important?

* It offers a service to the community whereby "problem reptiles" are removed from a potentially dangerous situation.

* It reduces the risk of inexperienced persons from attempting to remove the snake and thus limits the risk of serious injury.

* It provides a win-win situation for both human and reptile. By removing and relocating the animal we are not only potentially saving lives, but also conserving our reptile fauna.

* The Reptile Relocation Unit also provides invaluable education as to the vital role that snakes play in our environment. More often than not it takes more time educating the person concerned than capturing the snake itself.

We offer this service at no charge

Since its inception the unit has gone from strength to strength. As a result we are now covering a wide area, traveling as far as 70km on reptile related call-outs.
We cover the areas of Hazyview, Graskop,Sabie, Bushbuck Ridge as well as previously disadvantaged communities such as Nkuhlu, Marite, and acornhoek.

Through these interactions with the community we realised that knowledge of reptiles regarding both identification and behavior was based on myth, folklore, and old-wives tales rather than solid fact.
As a result of this the idea of Perry's Bridge Reptile Park, and this website, was born.
